Ivan Patzaichin International Canoe Marathon: an endurance competition in the heart of the Danube Delta, May 22-24, Tulcea – Mila 23
The Legacy Lives On
The name of great athlete Ivan Patzaichin – returns to where it fits best: the heart of a sporting challenge – The International Canoe Marathon Ivan Patzaichin, an event dedicated to kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddle (SUP) enthusiasts.
Taking place from May 22–24, the marathon officially opens the tourist season in the Danube Delta. Participants will follow the “Ivan’s Delta” ecotourism route—a path that connects the Ivan Patzaichin Memorial in Tulcea to the newly inaugurated Ivan Patzaichin Museum in Mila 23.
The 45 km course is designed to welcome everyone, making the experience accessible for both professional athletes and nature and adventure enthusiasts, offering two distinct ways to experience the Delta:
- Elite Category: A grueling one-day challenge for professional athletes seeking to test their limits.
- Loisir Category: A two-day journey for nature and adventure enthusiasts who wish to soak in the surroundings at a steadier pace.
The Rowing Marathon is not just a competition but also a model of sustainable tourism that combines environmental protection, ecological education, the promotion of natural and cultural heritage, and the development of innovative infrastructures.
Its innovative character comes from the setup of two overnight stay points along the “Ivan’s Delta” route, harmoniously integrated into nature using natural materials and autonomous energy systems. Additionally, a digital application – Ivan’s Delta – has been developed for navigation and route monitoring. You can find it in Google Play or Apple Store.
Below you will find the most important and useful details about the competition, participation, prizes, accommodation options, and more. We also provide all the necessary information to guide you on your way to Tulcea and the Danube Delta.

TULCEA - CITY INTRODUCTION
The venue is in Tulcea, Romania.
Tulcea city is situated in the north part of Dobrogea, in the south-eastern part of Romania, close to Constanta.
The city of Tulcea, laid out on seven hills like Rome, has been an important harbor since ancient times. It has a population of about 90,000 inhabitants. Located at the tip of the three channels of Danube river, where the famous Danube river finally ends its journey through Europe as it empties into the Black sea creating the famous Danube Delta, Tulcea makes a great starting point for exploring the Delta.
The Danube Delta is comprised of an intricate network of waterways and lakes divided between the three main estuary channels of the Danube. The area of floating reed islands, forests, pastures and sand dunes covers 3,000 square miles and is home to a vast array of wildlife.
Tulcea, also known as the entry gates to the Danube Delta, represents one of the most inspiring venues for organizing a rowing marathon.
